Advocacy:Environmental Conservation Through Banana Fiber Menstrual Solutions
Every year, millions of disposable sanitary pads end up in landfills, wetlands, and waterways where they take hundreds of years to decompose. At the same time, thousands of girls in Uganda continue to miss school because they cannot consistently access safe and affordable menstrual products.
My advocacy addresses these two challenges through one sustainable solution: promoting biodegradable sanitary pads made from banana fiber.
Uganda is one of Africa's leading producers of bananas, generating significant quantities of agricultural waste that often go unused. By transforming banana fiber into biodegradable menstrual products, we can convert agricultural waste into environmental value while improving menstrual health and creating economic opportunities for local communities.
As an environmental advocate and youth leader, my vision is to champion the introduction and expansion of this innovation within Uganda through strategic partnerships with innovators in the East African community. The initiative seeks to reduce plastic pollution, strengthen menstrual health education, empower girls to remain in school, and support green entrepreneurship among women and young people.
Environmental conservation should not be separated from human dignity. When communities are equipped with sustainable solutions that protect both people and the planet, we create lasting social and environmental impact.
Inspiration:
As an East African ,I have witnessed both the environmental challenges caused by non-biodegradable waste and the difficulties many girls face in accessing affordable menstrual products .Inspired by the abundance of banana plants in our region ,I believe banana fiber offers an innovative, sustainable solution that protects our environment while restoring dignity, confidence and opportunity for girls and women
